A Fat Tuesday Tale (Collective Derp)

Posted on February 12, 2013

My driver’s license are up for renewal and today seemed like a good day to rectify the situation and get myself road-legal again.

That’s how I found myself standing in the cold rain outside the Department of Motor Vehicles this morning.

I wasn’t the only one, far from it, in fact I was one of a group of twenty five folks huddled under umbrellas waiting for the doors to open at 8AM.

As the wind and the rain picked up 8:00 came and went and then 8:05, then 8:10.

Inside the glass doors of the temple of state sanctioned driving all was dark and still, no lights, no one visible, silent as a tomb.

A lady next to me suddenly lifted her head and looked around, “Wait, what’s today”?

“February 12th”, someone replied.

She laughed, “They ain’t gonna open today, it’s Fat Tuesday, they closed, all the state office buildings and the court house too”.

Feeling silly and slightly embarrassed we all plodded back to our cars in a downpour, wondering why state offices located three hundred miles from New Orleans were closed for Mardi Gras…

Guess I’ll try again tomorrow…
